For nine days, starting from 11 September, Jet Swan will be the artist in residence at Brunswick, Scarborough, offering free photographic portraits to shoppers at the Centre, as part of a project that explores the relationship between the individual and the shopping centre.

Jet Swan, who specialises in fine art portraits, is a photographer working in the fields of art and fashion. Trained at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London she has worked collaboratively on photography projects in various locations across the world including Uganda, Russia and London.

Jet, who chose the location because of fond memories of Scarborough from her childhood, explained.

“I am fascinated by the shopping centre as a cultural and social space and the relationship they have with the people who visit and shop at them.”

She adds, Having your portrait taken is a creative collaboration between photographer and subject, and I am excited to be able to extend that opportunity and experience to a broader audience and to be able to share with everyone their finished portrait.”

Sue Anderson-Brown, centre manager at Brunswick, said: “We are excited to host this photographic project here in Scarborough. Brunswick, like many shopping centres, is the hub of local life; it provides a safe, secure environment for people to shop, dine, meet, relax and be entertained. This project is an example of how the Centre is committed to forging partnerships that creatively engage our local community. It’s fantastic that Jet has chosen Brunswick and I know our customers will grasp the opportunity to have their portraits taken.”

Portrait sessions are free, and shoppers taking part will be able to download their image to keep.

To participate, you will be able to simply walk-in to the safe, socially distanced pop-up studio that Jet is creating on the ground floor of the Mall; alternatively, you can contact Jet by email at theshoppingcentreproject@gmail.com.
